Apple will not include near field communication chips used for fast payments in shops in the iPhone 5, expected to be released next summer, slashing hopes for a universal standard for the technology adoption within this year.

The Independent stated that "Sources at several of the largest mobile operators in the UK" revealed Apple had disclosed it would not include NFC technology – enableing payment for products with a wave of the device on a shop's reader – in the newest version of the iPhone, that is nor iPhone 4GS nor the iPhone 5.

Apparently Apple was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry. Yet Apple is known to be working on its own NFC proposal, which would enable payments through iTunes. Apparently they hope to introduce this technology in a mobile phone next year.

According to the Independent, the consulting group Frost & Sullivan payment values via NFC will reach €110bn by 2015. This year has Google launched the Nexus S, a mobile phone containing NFC hardware support, and this wireless technology received backing by the GSMA, the mobile industry trade association last February.

Yet mobile operators, handset makers and retailers did  not reach an agreement on the standards, which would be needed for wider adoption, despite talking inconclusively about a possible common standard.
